Grateful Foundations: Jimmy Hoang's Ministry Journey After RTS
"Seminary exists to serve the church," reflects Jimmy Hoang (MATS 2023, RTS Orlando), a truth he lives out daily as associate pastor of Risen Hope Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His post-graduation journey exemplifies grateful stewardship of theological education in unexpected places.
From Classroom to Calling
Hoang carries deep gratitude for his RTS Orlando experience. "I greatly appreciated my professors who helped cultivate in me theological virtues and a greater love for God's Word," he shares. "I am a better pastor and a Christian because of my time at RTS." This foundation proved essential as he transitioned from Florida's warmth to the Midwest's four seasons.
Growing with a Growing Church
As associate pastor of Risen Hope Baptist Church, a young church plant, Hoang marvels at God's provision. "It blows me away to see [our congregation] live out Acts 2:42," he reflects. "We've seen the Lord provide the necessary resources through the faithful giving of our people."
Family and Unexpected Blessings
Ministry in Sioux Falls has brought surprising joys for Hoang and his family. Married to his wife Allison, they're raising their daughter, Marcy, and toddler son, Quynh, in their adopted Northern Plains home. Though both grew up in the South, they've grown to love their new context. "The dramatic difference in weather and culture has forced me to adapt, which provides unique opportunities and challenges," Hoang explains.
When not shepherding his congregation, Hoang treasures family time. "My world revolves around keeping two little kids alive. They are a bundle of joy." His favorite verse, Psalm 20:7, anchors his pastoral philosophy in trusting God rather than worldly resources.
Wisdom Born from Gratitude
Hoang's counsel to current students flows from thankfulness: "Seminary is a unique season of life, so soak in as much wisdom from your professors, readings, and writing assignments because it will serve you well in future ministry." He emphasizes remaining connected to local church life: "Be a faithful member of your local church and pray for opportunities to bless others with what you're learning." Most importantly, Hoang has discovered that effective ministry flows from spiritual priorities. "Since becoming a pastor, I've learned that I can only be effective if I first devote my time primarily to God's Word and prayer."
