Did Jesus Say That? A Prosopological-Contextual-Typological Interpretation of Paul’s Quotation of Psalm 69:9b in Romans 15:3

This paper, written by Joshua M. Duemler at Reformed Theological Seminary – Charlotte for Dr. Robert J. Cara, examines Paul’s quotation of Psalm 69:9b in Romans 15:3 through the lenses of prosopological, contextual, and typological interpretation. Duemler asks whether Jesus can be understood as the speaker in this passage and argues that Paul’s hermeneutic supports a nuanced, Christ-centered reading that honors both human and divine authorship.

Building on Matthew Bates’ work on prosopological exegesis, Duemler contends that Paul employs this method in a way that remains faithful to the psalm’s context and to its typological connection between David and Christ. He demonstrates that the reproach endured by David prefigures the suffering of Christ, who fulfills Psalm 69 not only as its subject but also as its divine speaker.

Ultimately, Duemler concludes that a prosopological-contextual-typological approach allows readers to see how Paul’s interpretation upholds the unity of Scripture and the depth of the Gospel—revealing Christ as the one who bears reproach for the sake of God’s people and their endurance in faith.
