This research paper, written by Evan Zhuo at Reformed Theological Seminary – Charlotte for Dr. Chad Van Dixhoorn, examines Christ’s teaching and actions concerning the Sabbath in the Synoptic Gospels. Zhuo argues that Jesus did not abolish the Sabbath but restored its original purpose as a day of redemption—set apart for mercy, worship, and rest in God’s grace.
Through careful analysis of Christ’s Sabbath healings, synagogue teachings, and the controversy over plucking grain, Zhuo demonstrates that Jesus’ ministry upheld the Sabbath as a divine gift for humanity rather than a burdensome regulation. By showing mercy and performing acts of restoration, Christ revealed the Sabbath’s true intent: liberation and renewal through Him, the Lord of the Sabbath.
