Forgiving Sins at a Pharisee’s Table: Luke 7:36–50 and the Mission of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke

This paper by Johannes Damaschke, submitted to Dr. Michael J. Kruger for NT5200 – Gospels at Reformed Theological Seminary – Charlotte, examines the narrative of Luke 7:36–50, where Jesus forgives a sinful woman during a Pharisee’s dinner.

Damaschke argues that this encounter exemplifies Luke’s major theme of divine reversal—where the self-righteous are exposed and sinners receive grace. Through detailed exegesis of the Greek text, the paper shows that Jesus’ pronouncement of forgiveness reveals His Messianic authority and the redemptive purpose of His mission.

The study connects the passage to Luke’s broader theology of ἁμαρτωλός (sinner), demonstrating that Jesus’ mission fulfills divine prophecy by bringing forgiveness to those marginalized by religious elites. Damaschke concludes that the story redefines righteousness, showing that salvation and peace come only through faith in Christ, not through status or law-keeping.
